You read yesterday about my plans to return to Haiti in February. Nick Twomey, lead pastor at BayPointe Church, stepped up big already, sending out the message below to his e-mail list. Thank you so much, Nick!

Friends,

My friend Onlee Bowden is teaching a communications class to help people who want to learn to communicate better (more clearly and confidently)–whether you speak publicly or not.  She’s good at what she does and I know many who have benefited from her class.

But here’s the other cool part: Onlee is using the money from this class to serve a group of orphan girls in Haiti who have no one.  Our church, Bay Pointe, has taken on this orphanage, plus a feeding program at a school, micro-loans, etc in Pignon, Haiti as part of a long-term partnership to bring long-term solutions.  No “band aids” here.  No “hit and run.”  We are in this for the long haul.

So if you want to learn how to communicate better…for a great cause, contact Onlee and enroll in her class.  Guys, if you’re married (or dating)…you probably need it most :)

Best,

Nick

All you have to do is enroll in a class, or refer one of your friends. It is a simple way to make a world of difference for these children in Haiti. It’s simple. Just click here.

Your Voice Can Make It Happen

Greetings to my friends.

Many of you showed overwhelming support when I traveled to Haiti in November. My time was amazing and the work is really just beginning. We are now sending a teaching team to begin the work of providing a handful of girls, who were orphaned after the earthquake, with pathways out of nothingness. This will be an ongoing effort over the next several years as the younger girls become older. Please understand these girls have nothing and no one to help them through this. Imagine girls from 5 years old to 22 years old with no one except us. I have to be there… I just know I have to. So… I’m part of a teaching /mentoring / give these girls a momma, team and I need to be able to afford to make this happen.

I’m not comfortable asking for money so I’m asking for something different. You’re receiving this email because you are already one of my champions. If I can fill my upcoming classes I can go back to Pignon in February.

What I need from you is promotion. Please get on the phone and tell your friends about the upcoming classes. Send the email along and sing my praises. Do whatever you can to get that one person off the mark and to take the class. If both classes filled at 10 participants, I can afford to go.

Thank you for support and your confidence. Onlee

John Paul, President/CEO the Bank of Northern Michigan

In an extremely crowded and competitive banking market, how you separate from the pack is critical.  A clear distinction needs to be made in order to solidify your position and improve your share of the market.  Given the fundamental nature of our business and the similarity of products and services offered by various banks in a particular market, the only real way to rise above the crowd is by clearly differentiating your people.  We have felt, as a relatively new bank that we must have the best bankers in every market we serve.  This manifests itself through a reputation of having knowledgeable, professional and articulate business people serving the needs of our clients.

We can train to create a knowledge base that makes our bankers strong business advisors, but we felt that to truly have an impact, we needed to provide our staff with the tools to confidently communicate everyday with our clients, our prospects and each other.  I became aware of Onlee’s program as a result of a strong recommendation from one of our Board members.  Spending time with her, I knew that her approach to speaking in public was exactly what we needed.

We had our entire staff complete the Level I program.  I watched as members of our staff who were extremely uncomfortable speaking in front of a group (even though that group was their peers), matured over the 5 weeks we worked together.  The culmination of this class was a presentation by each covering why someone should bank with The Bank of Northern Michigan.  The confidence that they all displayed served as testimony to the effectiveness of Onlee’s program.  I see the key elements displayed every day by various staff members in all sorts of situations.

As a management team, we made the decision to follow Level I for all our staff members with Level II, targeting our Commercial Relationship Managers, Client Service staff and key Mortgage folks as well. I firmly believe that the confidence our staff continues to build in their day-to-day communication style will set us on the course I envision.  That confidence will help build a level of credibility for our Bank that will in fact, set us apart in this crowded banking market.  Thanks Onlee!

The Core of the Matter…

Posted by Onlee Bowden on November 15th, 2010 at 9:32am
Nov

Let’s get right to right to the heart of the matter…  There is only one truly compelling reason to take a public speaking class if you’re determined to become stronger as a communicator and that is… it flat out it works

Public speaking has an unfair rep as a life-sucking experience that leaves you wishing you were the one in the casket instead of the one delivering the eulogy. (Okay, not my joke, Jerry Seinfeld’s.)

The thing is, public speaking is sadly misunderstood and overly mystified leaving most of us just praying we don’t have to bump into it.  We think we have to be BIGGER and BETTER than ourselves to stand up and talk, and this is simply not true!

Conventional thinking and teaching of public speaking often misses the most important mark and that is, we already have the skills inside us and we really don’t need to become some fake feeling other person.

Public Speaking pulls from our most used and most effective CORE communication skills;  organization, thinking on our feet, letting go of distracting thoughts, and paying genuine attention to who you’re speaking to is what we do every single day.

This is a possible thing to make happen in your life and when you’re stronger at your core, your just plain stronger over all.  Give it a try… write down a half dozen skills that you use every day that builds understanding and enhances your relationships.  These are your core skills.  Now ask yourself, “How can I begin to utilize these skills in situations that I feel less confident?”

Hey… It’s a start!

Onlee,

I wanted to send a quick note to thank you! After struggling with certain anxieties and other impediments to delivering a solid presentation, I just had my first “post class” success!

Using your methods for preparation and framework for presentations that you taught to me in your class, I just made my first presentation at a work event and it was terrific! With my outline in hand, I delivered a heartfelt, succinct and impactful presentation and was rewarded with many positive comments and feedback. I”m so grateful for what I’ve been able to accomplish with just your beginners class, I’ll be asking for the opportunity to participate in your intermediate class too!
Thank you so much!

Favorite Speakers: Angie words to Mom

Posted by Onlee Bowden on September 4th, 2009 at 6:09am

People ask me who my favorite speakers are. I think I’m the most impressed with everyday people who rise up for whatever is calling to them. My daughter Angie comes to mind. About two years ago to the day my Mother passed away. My daughter asked to say a few words at her funeral. She’s never really spoken in front of people before this. She wrote out what was in her heart and with all the love in her being she spoke. My heart exploded as I listened to her carefully chosen words.

Before I lead us in prayer, I would like to say share a few thoughts.

Today you will hear the stories of my Grandmother’s life. Some of her journeys as a girl, then a young woman, a wife, a mother, and finally as a grandmother; but for a few minutes, I would like to share with you the moment when my Grandmother passed away.

During the time we waited for her strong willed body to finally lay it’s self to rest, there was always a family member there… holding and kissing her hands, running their fingers through her hair, and fussing over if she was comfy enough. The beautiful part is that all of her children were there telling childhood stories, laughing, weeping, and supporting each other through their time of need.

I read a saying once that said, “friends are God’s apology for family.” This may be true at times but it sure wasn’t the case here. I can say one thing for this family… when tragedy strikes, we all unite for comfort and a loving shoulder to cry on. I sure hope that when I pass, my boys show me the honor that Grandma’s children have given her.

Through all of this there is one special person I really want to capture… my Uncle Stanley.

Stanley never left his Mother’s side. We even had a hard time convincing him that it was alright to please go and brush his teeth! He stood next to her side frequently letting her know that she was loved, a wonderful Mother, and that we were all there with her. When her moment came, he was the only one with her and it warms my heart to the core to know that he wasn’t robbed of that very special moment. My Aunt Jane said it so true “we know Mom was waiting for her and Stanley to be alone, because that’s the way she would have wanted it.”

Grandma, as your grandchild I will miss your sugar coated pancakes and snuggles wrapped up in a towel after a bath when you would rock me singing, “I love you a bushel and a peck.” And now I can even say I will miss the “huge” hand made underwear you always sewed for us as children.

After everything is said and done, I sure hope there was a huge Madre Gras parade waiting for your grand arrival into heaven… “You bet your dirty neck I do.”
